_Teachers should have the same expactations for all their students.

The sign don't hurt yourself means that you should not do anything that might hurt your grade or your future in a bad way. It probably also means, to not hurt yourself physicly. A situation where a student migtht "hurt" himself/herself is, if that student does not care about his/her grades. That student is hurting his or her's future.
